Thames Velo is a race orientated cycle club with many, although not all, of our members actively participating in the various
disciplines of the racing scene: road and track racing, time trials, cyclocross and audax.
The club is nominally based in Maidenhead in Berkshire but with a membership base covering Slough, Bracknell, Wokingham, Windsor, Ascot and Reading.
Our members are performance orientated cyclists who enjoy and benefit from riding and training with like-minded people. For anybody looking to
dip their toe into the world of cycle racing (of whatever genre) the advice and support available from other club members will make the process
a whole lot less daunting. You can follow us and get news on Twitter or Facebook
The club has a number of key activities with the objective of enjoying cycling and building fitness
Tuesday evening chain gang
As above but only during the summer period.
Cyclo cross training
Weekly cyclo cross training activities to prepare for the winter cycle cross racing season.
Saturday morning chain gang
An hour of hard training on a road circuit (loop). The ride is typically split into two groups: the ‘foxes’ is a slower group (pace: tempo) starts first with the ‘hounds’ the faster group (pace: race) chasing down the foxes. Each group works together in a pace line or chaingang formation. The session requires good levels of fitness, bike handing and group riding skills but there is little to match it for fun and improved fitness. Don’t worry if you drop off the pace, the next group will be round again in a few minutes.
Sunday club ride
These are no-drop and social rides including a coffee/cake stop and typically going into the Chilterns or Hampshire Hills. Average pace is around 26-27km/h and 80-90km distance. If you are thinking about getting involved with the club this is probably the place to start. Details about route and start times can be found on Thames Velo Strava feed https://www.strava.com/clubs/thamesvelo
Other rides and activites
Club members arrange various mid-week rides and longer trips to participate in UK and overseas events and training camps to benefit from some early season warm weather training. Through the winter months PT Pete also runs regular midweek turbo sessions.
This year marked the 35th anniversary of Thames Velo since it was formed by four riders to participate and promote road racing. We are very proud that the ethos and spirit of the original members continues to this day and that we are still racing and promoting road races for the benefit of the sport. On Sunday 12th May 2019 we held our 35th annual Thames Velo Spring Road Race with a 3/4 category race in the morning, and a E/1/2/3 race in the afternoon. £1000 worth of cash prizes were up for grabs with £500 going to the winner of the E/1/2/3 race, we had our first Thames Velo winner too for the 3/4 race. Thames Velo is not a tri club but a number of our most active members are triathletes who find that riding with the club allows them to hone their
cycling skills and performance. The only thing that we would ask is not to bring your tri-bike on club runs.
Thames Velo has a sponsorship agreement with the the UK’s leading sports recovery protein brand For Goodness Shakes
