Thames Velo Training Camp - Javea, Spain Feb. 2014

This years training camp was the sixth edition and held between the dates of 23rd February and 1st March at the usual location of Javea in Spain.

Over the years the opportunity to do some pre-season training in the far more agreeable Spanish winter has always been well attended but this year proved to be its most popular with fifteen Velo flying out to entirely take over our regular base of the Costamar Hotel.

After a delayed flight and a long wait for our bikes to arrive in the baggage reclaim we eventually arrived at the hotel to be met by Big Al Pittar who is our regular guide when we visit and an invaluable resource by taking the worry about routes and lunch stops etc and leaving everyone to enjoy their riding.

The first morning saw the sun rise over the harbour and after a talkative breakfast (it got quieter each day!) all that could be heard was the sound of a track pump and cleated shoes on marble floors as bikes were prepared and eventually gathered outside the hotel for the first ride out.

Those experiencing their first taste of riding in Spain instantly realised why so many professional teams use Javea for their own training camps as the weather, roads and terrain are perfect for riding and gaining form, and seeing the sight of familiar jerseys from the pro peloton, being worn by their intended users, shows just how many pros live and train in the region.

Without going into the details of every ride, the highlights can be summed up as, some fantastic riding with mostly fantastic weather on wonderful smooth roads. There were some big efforts by those that rode their first 100 milers of the year, as well as those that rode their first 120 milers with 11,620ft of climbing, a 95 mile ride with a block headwind that never seemed to end, and a breakaway into the race back to Javea that will go down in Thames Velo history (it will so long as I keep mentioning it!).

On the downside, there were a couple of unfortunate spills that left bruises and road rash, and a bout of the lurgy that left a few hotel bound and unable to ride.

For most, it was a very successful weeks training and riders have returned home with the building blocks of great form. Next years trip is already being planned and the hotel already booked so the 2015 trip is already looking popular!
